No city in Peru offers as many museums as the capital. Museums in Lima offer history and art; this converts it into a cultural centre with many options.

There are more than 70 museums in Lima; there are art museums, history, science and archaeological museums, including archaeological sites. You really need to plan your museum trips before you go as there are so many and there can be large distances between them. Any tourist book about Lima will have a large section dedicated to museums where you can chose which you would like to visit. Among the main ones are:

The National Archaeological, Anthropological and History Museum. In the Pueblo Libre district, it is one of the oldest museums in Peru. It houses valuable treasures from the Chavín, Moche, Wari, Paracas and Inca cultures. It is right next door to the house where Simón Bolívar, the liberator, lived; you can visit the house with the same entrance ticket.

The Rafael Larco Herrar Archaeological Museum. 3000 years of pre-Columbian history are narrated in this museum through the collections of gold, silver, textiles and ceramic. It is quite close to the National Archaeological Museum, in the same Pueblo Libre district.

New Lima Virtual Metropolitan museum. Peru?s first virtual museum is in Lima. A historical route from the days of the Indian chief Taurichusco, you can witness the colonization of the Rímac valley and the founding of the City of Kings, by watching 3D films and narrations by historical characters that come back to life thanks to holograms. A special section is the 4D reproduction of the 1746b earthquake, where you see scenes of Lima?s colonial high society as well as that of the town?s people, all equal victims to the force of nature. The museum is located near the historical centre.

Lima?s Gold Museum. Miguel Mujica Gallo created this museum of priceless treasure, now it is run by the foundation that bears his name Golden treasure from Peru is accompanied by jewels from the entire world, and a collection of weapons from the five continents. It is in the eastern area of Lima.

The Congress and Inquisition Museum. Right in the Historical Centre and next to the Republic?s Congress, this museum, is a witness to the dark days of the Catholic Church, during the vice-regal period until 1813. Entrance is free.

Peruvian Culture Museum. The suggestive facade gives a clear idea of the type of collection housed in this museum, aimed towards showing the ethnological and anthropological variety of our homeland, especially from the mountain range and forest areas. The cloths, musical instruments, altarpieces, masks, and utensils that belong to the different native societies of Peru are showcased in this museum not far from the Historical Centre of Lima.

Museum of the Nation. Just some minutes from the financial district it is located in an imposing building, formerly home to the Fishing Ministry. The modern architecture from the 70?s hides rooms dedicated to temporary exhibitions of pre-Columbian treasures. But the permanent exhibition that most captures the attention of the people from Lima is found on the sixth floor, a photography exhibition with testimonials of the 20 years of terrorism that Peru suffered at the end of the 20th century: the Yuyananpa aq to remember collection,; organized by the Truth and Reconciliations Commission.

Metropolitan Museum. It houses art collections from all periods of Peru?s history, including contemporary art from the best of Peru?s representatives: Fernando de Szyszlo, Cristina Gálvez, Joaquín Roca Rey among many more. The drawing and customs rooms are really worth a visit, as well as the photographs of Juan Bautista and Carlos Verme.
